Not all music affects your body the same way. The same melody played on different instruments can either calm your nervous system or quietly activate it.
In this clip from Know Thyself, the conversation reveals something fascinating about the relationship between sound and biology. When researchers compared the same melodic structure played through a cello, a piano, a violin, and the human voice, the results were striking. The cello and the middle to lower range of the piano were perceived as the most relaxing.
Why? Because their vibrational frequencies align almost perfectly with the natural range of a mother’s soothing voice. The body recognizes that frequency at a primal level. It feels like home.
The upper register of a violin tells a different story. Its intense vibrato can feel emotionally invasive, especially in moments when you are already overstimulated. And the human voice, while beautiful, introduces another layer entirely. The moment language enters the picture, your brain shifts into different processing systems. It begins decoding meaning, which is more taxing, more exerting, and ultimately less restful than wordless sound.
This is why instrumental music with deep, grounding tones often feels so healing. It speaks the language your nervous system was wired to understand long before you ever learned a single word.
When you need to calm your nervous system, do you reach for music with words or without?
