Lately it keeps coming back that Jesus did not walk around trying to build something we could manage or organize or guard, and somehow we ended up doing exactly that while telling ourselves it was faith. His first people were not following a set of rules or a finished answer, they were walking a direction together, and that feels important in a way that lands slowly rather than loudly. When he said the kingdom of heaven was within us, it did not sound like a promise for later or a reward for behaving well, it sounded like an invitation to notice what was already alive here and now. Somewhere after his death that invitation got wrapped in fear and structure and responsibility was moved away from our own awareness and placed into systems that claimed to speak for God. We grew up learning how to reach outward instead of staying present to what was already breathing inside us, and that shaped how we relate to ourselves and each other more than we usually admit. Rebuilding feels less like choosing a side and more like returning to a relationship that never stopped waiting, where following Jesus looks like paying attention again and accepting that no institution can do that work for us.
