We have internalized the idea that cognitive function must decline after age 60. This narrative, popularized by Sir William Osler, suggests that humans become useless after the fifth or sixth decade. However, the Seattle Longitudinal Study led by Professor Warner Schaie reveals a different truth. When we track individuals over time rather than looking at population averages, we see that significant cognitive loss is not an inevitable outcome of aging. We can maintain high levels of function by challenging these outdated assumptions.
