Most women think intermittent fasting is dangerous or that it will wreck their hormones, but much of this concern is based on a faulty animal study.
For women dealing with hormonal problems like PCOS, a sluggish thyroid, menopausal weight gain, or irregular periods, intermittent fasting can be especially beneficial. The caveat is that you have to gear your intermittent fasting plan to your specific biology. The protocol for a woman with PCOS will look different from the protocol for a woman going through menopause.
To start intermittent fasting, you need a fasting window of 14 hours or greater. Many of the benefits of fasting are related to lowering insulin, which allows your body to tap into its fat reserves for fuel.
When insulin is too high, androgens can become elevated and contribute to estrogen dominance and low progesterone. This can affect your mood and contribute to symptoms like facial hair and cystic acne.
By lowering insulin, intermittent fasting can support hormone balance, fertility, and thyroid health and function and help reduce symptoms associated with menopause.
If youâre wondering whether youâre following the right intermittent fasting pattern, go by how you feel.
