Professional surfer Koa Smith has spent much of his life chasing some of the biggest waves in the world. But after a traumatic brain injury left him unable to surf and struggling with depression, his relationship with himself – and the sport he loved – began to change.
After discovering Dr Joe’s work, Koa began using meditation to cultivate the same focus and connection he experienced in the ocean in his everyday life. Today, he meditates every morning, getting clear on his intentions and mentally rehearsing the experiences he wants to create.
Before surfing big waves, that means tuning in to the outcome – seeing himself safely back on the beach, connecting with the exact wave he wants to ride, and then committing fully when the moment arrives.
Koa shares how this practice has influenced his approach to surfing, contributed to one of the defining moments of his career, and helped him move from living in survival to seeing life through the lens of possibility.
