“I made a decision in that moment that I was going to hear. I decided.”
Maria had been deaf in her left ear since she was three years old, after a case of mumps damaged her auditory nerve. For 40 years, she hid her condition from nearly everyone, working hard to never stand out. Specialists told her repeatedly that nothing could be done. Her nerve was dead, they said, and she would never hear from that ear again.
After attending her first few retreats and witnessing others’ Stories of Transformations, Maria began to shift her belief about what was possible for herself. “Someone was talking about curing cancer, and something in my mind clicked,” she recalls. “If people are doing all these great things… why can’t I recreate my nerve?’” Once she returned home, she began meditating daily, visualizing her auditory nerve regenerating. Over time, she began to feel subtle sensations. And while at a recent retreat, she finally began to hear faint vibrations – then sounds – in her left ear again.
A follow-up exam confirmed it: Maria’s left ear was registering tones that had not registered before. Though her doctor was stunned, Maria wasn’t. She had already decided she was going to hear again. She was no longer the other person – she had left that identity behind – and today, Maria can hear in both ears.
