When paying attention, three main categories of experience can be observed:
1.Direct Experience: This is simply what is happening.
2. Awareness: This is the "knowing" behind the experience, an aspect that is present and holds what is happening.
3. The Story: This layer sits between awareness and experience, moderating the relationship between the two and determining whether there is suffering or ease.
While individuals cannot impact the experience arising or change the awareness itself, the story can be intercepted.
Playing with the story can change the emotional expression associated with an experience.
Beyond working with the story, one can also choose to let it go, which invites a deeper level of surrender.
