Keep watching for more about electrolytes and how to stay properly hydrated:
Does it seem like water isn’t quenching your thirst? There are two main reasons this can happen: You may not be drinking enough fluid, or you may have low blood volume. Low blood volume is the more common scenario.
Low blood volume is one of the most common causes of excessive thirst. Drinking more water can actually make the problem worse, leaving you with constant thirst.
To retain enough fluid and maintain healthy blood volume, you need adequate salt.
Low sodium and low blood volume symptoms include:
• Feeling dizzy or unstable when standing up quickly
• Persistent thirst, especially at night
• Fatigue, weak muscles, or cramping
• Poor sleep
• Headaches
• Feeling cold
• Constipation
• Dark urine
• Dry mouth and dry eyes
You need around 3000 to 4000 mg of sodium each day to maintain healthy hydration levels. This is equal to about 1½ to 2 teaspoons of salt per day. If you’re an athlete or physically active, you may need more.
