Learn more about supporting your immune system naturally. Watch these next:
Your adrenal glands produce cortisol, which helps keep inflammation under control. Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid that’s about four times more potent than cortisol, so it can reduce inflammation very quickly. It can also suppress your body’s natural cortisol production, affecting adrenal function even after you stop taking it.
Prednisone can also affect your body’s mineral balance. Sodium can rise while potassium decreases, potentially contributing to fluid retention and high blood pressure.
Beyond reducing inflammation, prednisone can also suppress normal immune function. The longer you take prednisone, the greater the potential effect on your immune system.
For autoimmune disease, prednisone doesn’t address the underlying cause. It temporarily suppresses the immune response and inflammation. Prednisone side effects can include bone loss, blood sugar problems, muscle loss, eye problems, mood changes, and many more.
