You could consume one cup of sugar every day for 10 years without noticing any obvious problems. Your A1C and blood sugar may still be normal, although you might experience brain fog. The average adult consumes around 50–57 teaspoons of sugar daily.
Much of this sugar comes from hidden sugar in starches, which can have a higher glycemic index than table sugar. Your blood sugar may still appear normal because insulin removes sugar from the blood. Many people have high insulin without knowing it because they never test their fasting insulin. Ideally, you want your fasting insulin below 5.
Chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol can take 15–20 years to develop after prolonged periods of high insulin and insulin resistance.
Common sources of hidden sugar include:
● Cereal
● Orange juice
● Whole wheat toast
● Baked potatoes
● Pasta
● Low-fat yogurt
● Soda
● Sports drinks
Chronic starch and sugar consumption can lead to insulin resistance, significantly affecting your metabolic health over time. Intermittent fasting and reducing your carbohydrate and sugar intake can help support healthy insulin and blood glucose levels.
